With this issue's feature layout article we revisit the South Australian outline layout built by the late Barry Lloyd. Sadly, Barry passed away last December, so this is the last time we are likely to see this very fine layout.
We have quite a variety of articles in this issue, some very much 'off the beaten track'.
Definitely 'off the beaten track' is the steam era Commonwealth Railways, but that hasn't stopped Dan Carmody following the prototype and adapting a r-t-r NSWGR low-frame 32 class into a model of the pre-war mainstay of the CR, the G class 4-6-0. This article also features a magnificent HO scale drawing of the prototype G class drawn by the very talented Lindsay Bennett.
Passenger carriages feature heavily in this issue, with the second part of Kevin Tiernan's comprehensive and easy to follow series on scratchbuilding a NSW VHO passenger brake van in HO scale.
Victoria is not neglected either, though the principles are useful for any prototype, with Tony Scott showing how to fit working vestibule connections to passenger carriages. If Tony can do this in N scale, it shouldn't be that hard to reproduce in the larger scales!
Staying in Victoria, though once more, the principles are true for any prototype or scale, Mark Laidlay creates very effective tarpaulins from tea bags.
Ron Cunningham's Branchline Ramblings column returns for this issue with a description of a visit to the editor's Lambing Flat layout, shortly before it was dismantled due to a house move.
NSWGR steam is definitely not neglected in this issue, with Steve Williamson overcoming a tricky problem with an Austrains 36 class and Ray Smith beginning a Gallery series describing his Standard Goods fleet, all converted from r-t-r Eureka 50 class locomotives.
Leon Oberg also describes two items of NSW rolling stock that have been recycled for use after their rail-borne careers that would make for interesting scenic features.
The Reviews section features two new items from Southern Rail, a ready-to-place stock race and their range of r-t-r Newcastle coalfields non-air hopper wagons.
The Recent Releases/News section, despite a definite slowdown in the commercial sector, still runs to five and a half pages of interesting information on new models, both released and due soon.
