This issue's feature layout is one we have featured before, back in 1993, when it was brand new. But, as with most layouts, it got a little tired as it aged, but rather than scrap it and start again, the owner, Martin Murden, decided to strip it back to baseboard and track and rebuild it. This article shows how successful this approach to renewing a layout can be.

This issue could well be described as an 'infrastructure' issue, as the theme is definitely buildings, starting with the first part of another multi-issue treatise, this time discussing the goods sheds of the SAR and how to model a typical example. In this first part, author Don Bishop describes the various types of goods sheds that could once be found serving the railway users of South Australia.

Don has also written an associated article describing the process of adding ridge capping to buildings.

Phil Jeffery's Beyond the Fence series continues with a description, images and drawings of a type of building that one rarely see modeled, the various types of Salvation Army Hall that one can still find dotted about the landscape.

Continuing the infrastructure theme is a short description by Roger Lloyd of one of the ways one can make it easier for oneself when wiring and ballasting track.

If you have ever thought about adding non-train movement to your existing layout, Jonathan Majer has a few words to say on the subject in his article describing how he animated some traffic on his layout.

However, locomotives have not been forgotten, with a description by Phil Knife of a most unusual class of WAGR steam locomotives and how he build a model of one.

Models of  locomotives, rolling stock and infrastructure are all very nice, but to get the most from these individual models, one needs a layout to run them on, which can be a problem if you have only a small area available. Alan Shaw shows how he overcame his own lack of space and created a delightful little 'gem' of an N scale layout.

Speaking of layouts, this issue's Gallery features a glimpse of one of the great Australian exhibition layouts that few have even heard of, let alone seen.

When you have assembled all your rolling stock, built the infrastructure, constructed the baseboards and laid the track, you will need to control it all; a topic that regular columnist, Trevor Hodges, covers more than adequately in his In the Loop column in this issue.

Even the Reviews section is about infrastructure this issue, with reviews of the 5000 and 10000 gallon NSWGR locomotive water tank kits from Mechanical Branch Models, the latest 3D printed/cast brass NSWGR lower quadrant signal kits from Signals Branch (Ray Pilgrim) and a book completely filled with exquisite infrastructure images, the latest from Nick Anchen, Visions of Victoria The Magic of Kodachrome Film - 1950-1975.

Last, but not least, keep up with the latest intriguing happenings in the model railway world with the five image-filled pages of the Recent Releases/News section.

We also have available an online version of AMRM to compliment our traditional paper version. You can purchase the paper version from newsagents, hobby shops and specialist bookshops (or direct from AMRM if none of the above are convenient), while the online version can be purchased either through us or direct from Zinio International.

Back Issue: April 2014 AMRM

The April 2014 issue of AMRM is now available as a back issue direct from AMRM.

The April issue cover features a scene on my very own HO scale Lambing Flat, showing the level crossing, plus the new signal box that controls the junction to the new section of the layout that is described in this issue.

The contents of the April issue.

As mentioned above, this issue covers the extensions that have, and are being, constructed on my home layout, Lambing Flat.

(The second part of the article describing Iain Hunter's Broadford layout has had to be held over till the June issue, due to lack of space.)

And here is one we have been working on for (literally) years! A comprehensive modelling article (with a section on the prototype) on the original VR bogie J class hopper wagons, complete with a very comprehensive drawing of the prototype in both HO and O scales. The article describes two different approaches to converting an American prototype model to a J class, using two different brands as the source, by well-known VR modellers, Peter Ennis and Tony Gray.

Phil Knife brings us another in his series on building WAGR steam locomotives. The 'hints and tips' he describes are useful for building any model, not just the one he has constructed.

Another one that has been 'in the works' for a while. Alex C Brown presents another of his NSW passenger car conversions, showing how to create a model of a supplementary interurban car that we can pretty much guarantee will never be available r-t-r!

Ian Barnes takes us through the steps of fitting a DCC sound chip to a DJH steam locomotive kit.

Roy Elder shows that building good looking scenery isn't hard at all.

Peter Jarvis describes his collection of kit- and scratchbuilt versions of the BCV/BLV/MLV/MLK vans, the prototypes of which were described in Ian Dunn's article,
The BCV - A Much Modified Van, in AMRM Issue 293 (April 2012).

Unlike last issue, there is much more commercial news happening at the moment!
With over nine pages of Reviews and nearly seven of News and Recent Releases, there is plenty to tempt the wallet.
This issue we review the r-t-r Eureka VR R class 4-6-4 steam and Auscision AN class diesel locomotives, plus the r-t-r Southern Rail QR ALY four-wheel vans, Austrains NSWGR LHG/OHG goods brakevans, SDS VR U four-wheel louvred vans and Auscision VR VLX/BLX louvred/closed vans (all HO scale).
Lots of interesting stuff in the News section as well.

Back Issues: June 2012 AMRM

The June 2012 issue of AMRM is now available as a back issue.

The contents of the June issue

The feature layout is the Tumut Railway Modellers exhibition layout in HO scale depicting the long-closed Tumut and Gilmore stations.

This issue's feature article is part 1 of Ian Black's magnum opus on building the entire Southern Aurora in HO scale.

The first part covers the preliminaries and gets into construction of the NAM sleeping cars.

The next part, to be published in the August issue, completes the construction of the NAM cars, as well as the LAN and DAM sleepers.

On the other side of the continent, Phil Knife has been scratchbuilding WAGR steam locomotives, providing information that is of use to any scratchbuilding project, not just the prototypes described!

Infrastructure has not been overlooked in this issue, Warren Miller has adapted a European kit to represent the NSWGR's Victorian era locomotive sheds that handled the needs of the Department's steam locomotives near Redfern for over 80 years.

This issue's Gallery highlights the amazing work being done in N and T scale by skilled Victorian modeller, Paul Blake.

All this, plus the usual supporting features and seventeen pages of reviews and new product news, including the latest from Australia's own 'mini Nurnburg', the Hobson's Bay exhibition at Collingwood Vic, which was held over Easter.
