The contents of the February issue

After a run of (very fine) NSW layouts, it is time to go south of the border for February's feature layout.

Tony Scott describes his, now-demolished, N scale home layout, recalling the glory years of the 'blue and gold' era of the Victorian Railways.

Continuing the VR theme, Peter Ennis describes another of his VR wagon models.

For those constructing layouts and looking for a solution to the ongoing problem of access, David Bartle has an interesting (and scenically attractive) solution to the problem.

A bit of light entertainment, but with a serious edge, comes from Robert Gorrell, with a riposte to Trevor Hodges' recent In the Loop: Image Problem? What Image Problem?

The numerically largest section of our readership has not been forgotten though, with a few articles exploring various aspects of modelling the NSW railway system.

Ian Dunn has put together a Prototype File on the NSWGR's HBW four-wheel ballast hopper, essential reading for anyone building the Peter Boorman's Workshop kit (also reviewed in this issue) and of interest to anyone else who likes steam-era NSW rolling stock.

We are also trying out a new idea, an 'extended review' of a commercially available kit that goes beyond the areas usually covered by reviews. We have taken a Model 'N More building kit and not only reviewed the kit 'as provided', but have also shown how it can be modified to more closely resemble the prototype and how to achieve this, including painting and weathering.

This is unlikely to be our last 'extended review'!

We also have the usual 'regular' features, including another Beyond the Fence from Maikha Ly, describing some very 'modelable' buildings in Wolseley SA and the latest In the Loop from Trevor Hodges, describing his adventures dabbling in commercial kit building.

And then there is Gallery, taking an unusual departure this issue with a description by Les Fordham of an O scale outdoor layout that existed a very long time ago in Cheltenham (NSW) a northern suburb of Sydney.

The Reviews section covers a plethora of items that will be of interest to many readers, including the r-t-r Auscision NSWGR 43 class, Bendigo Rail Models Victorian P class and Haskell WA L class diesel locomotives. Also reviewed is a VR 30' goods shed kit in HO scale from new producer, Model Train Buildings, the aforementioned HO scale NSWGR HBW four-wheel hopper wagon kit from Peter Boreman's Workshop, new micro speakers for DCC installations from Model Railroad Craftsman and last, but not least, modelling inspiration in the form of two books (An Australian Locomotive Guide-Second Edition by Peter Clark, and The Daylight by Chris Banger) and a DVD, Australian Railway Historical Society Archives Collection Volume 1 The Alex Grunbach Films, produced by Belbin Video.

Despite it being traditionally a quiet time for announcements and new releases, the Recent Releases and News sections still manage to run to five pages, with a major release announced that will be of great interest to VR modellers. It may pay dividends for those VR enthusiasts to plan on attending the Corio exhibition over the weekend of 23-24 January!

Back Issue: February 2014 AMRM

The February 2014 issue of AMRM is now available as a back issue.


The February issue cover features a 1980s era V/Line passenger train passing under the Hamilton St bridge on the approach to Broadford, Vic, as reproduced in HO scale by Iain Hunter.

This issue we feature another layout of an Australian prototype that was constructed, and resides, overseas, this time in the UK. Iain Hunter's HO scale exhibition is also notable in that the VR broad gauge tracks are modelled to a scale 5'3" gauge.

If you have always wanted to scratchbuild a model, but weren't sure how to go about it, John Gilbert's article on scratchbuilding a VR signal box will set you right! The drawings accompanying the article, created by Lindsay Bennett, are some of the most comprehensive we have ever printed.

Bob Lynch describes how to build a working NSWGR turntable using a kit available from Gwydir Hobbies.

It's taken a while, but we have finally managed to convince Justin Moy to share some of his very convincing weathering techniques with our readers.

For the modern era modellers who want to 'get it right', Peter Attenborough presents another of his Today's Railway Scene series, this time covering the activities of the Manildra Group.

This issue's Gallery contains a follow-up to Jim Longworth's article in AMRM Issue 273 (December 2008) on the NSWGR's exhibition layouts, in the form of a selection of photos of the first NSWGR layout when it was on permanent display in Newcastle during the 1960 and '70s.

Also included in this issue are articles on VR footbridges, detailling a locomotive depot and building a lift-out layout section.

For the first time in years, the commercial sector has been relatively quiet for this issue, so the Reviews and News section only runs to eight pages, however we have still managed to review the Auscision NSW NHRH/PHCH/RHCH coal hoppers, the Little Building Co baker's shop, the latest volume of the Wheatley brother's Railway Portraits series and a rather useful colour hand-held LCD television receiver. It's an ill wind etc... as the smaller commercial section has allowed us to expand the number of articles included in this packed with 'goodies' 80 page issue.

Back Issues: June 2013

The June 2013 issue of AMRM is now available as a back issue.

In keeping with the 'looking back' theme of our 50th anniversary year, this issue's feature layout is Andrew Collier's 'under construction' VR suburban layout, Glenburn, set in the 1920s/'30s and showing that a 'non-standard' era layout is eminently buildable with intelligent selection of commercial products and some scratchbuilding.

We continue Bob Gallagher's three-part history of AMRM with the second part, covering the 'middle years' when great changes occurred and AMRM nearly disappeared due to a disaster that occurred when the printer burnt down in 1980!

Those building their own Southern Aurora will be pleased to read the fifth part of Ian Black's magnum opus, covering construction of the MHN passenger brake vans.

We also have the second part of Peter Jarvis's article on constructing a NSWGR water tank.

For those 'south of the border' we have a Prototype File on the VR's Castlemaine B signal box. The author, John Gilbert, will follow this up in a future issue with the construction of an HO scale model based on the box.

John Burford, a regular contributor, has penned an 'autobiography' of his 50 years in the model railway hobby, paralleling the development of the hobby over the last half century.

With great topicality, Ben O'Malley has written a 'how to' guide on fitting a DCC chip to the recently released Auscision 73 class.

This issue's Gallery features photographs from the 2012 Adelaide Model Railway Show by well-known photographer (and airman), Maikha Ly.

All this, plus many smaller, though no less useful, articles should make our 300th issue one to remember!

Eleven pages of reviews and new product news should keep you up to date with developments in the commercial side of the hobby. We review the Auscision 422 and 73 class locomotives, the Wuiske/Haskell r-t-r QR QSC/QSCW/QLCP vans, the ILM RU 'dress-up' kit and two new books from Train Hobby.
